Data Protection Act 1998

Under the Data Protection Act 1998, the general information that you supply about yourself is known as your "personal data". Certain information such as details of any criminal convictions, your ethnic origin and health is called "sensitive personal data".

What we will collect and why

All the personal and sensitive personal data we collect via the online recruitment process or through correspondence or other communication with you will be processed (i.e. recorded and used) for the purposes of recruitment and/or selection for employment purposes within Ocado. We do not share personal data with third parties, except as is necessary to carry out our business or as permitted by or required by law or other legal processes.

When you register with Ocado Careers, we will ask for information such as:

  • User name and password - to keep your information secure and so that you can return to a partially completed application.
  • Your name, address and postcode - so we can identify you and determine which of our sites is closest to you.
  • Email address - we will send confirmation of your log-on details and application confirmation to you via email.
  • Day time telephone number - so that we can contact you to arrange an assessment day or interview.
  • Depending on the role for which you are applying, you will be asked to either send in your CV or complete an online application form.
  • Your eligibility to work in the UK - as part of the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996, we are required to make basic documentation checks on every candidate.
  • Some of our roles require manual handling. If you are applying for such a position we will ask for details of your health so that we can undertake a risk assessment.
  • Depending on the nature of the role, we will ask for details of any criminal convictions you may have had in the last ten (10) years.

Information provided on the application form and any information obtained from other sources will be retained for as long as is required and will be used for a number of purposes including to:

  • Process your application.
  • If your application is successful, this personal and sensitive personal data will form the basis of your employment records discharging any legal or regulatory requirements.
  • Approach your nominated referees to obtain references.

The only circumstance where we may share some of your data with others is in the unlikely event that our business assets are ever sold to or purchased by another company (our data records are part of our business).

How we DO NOT use your personal data

  • We will not use your details to contact you with alternative employment opportunities; nor
  • Will we sell or rent your data to anyone else for marketing purposes; nor
  • Use equal opportunities' monitoring information in the selection process.

Security

As a company that does business purely over the internet, we understand the importance of security. That's why we've created highly secure facilities to give you confidence when you give us personal information, such as your address or telephone number.

We use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to encrypt your details whilst they travel from your computer to our system. This ensures your personal details are kept private except where we have advised you otherwise in this privacy statement.

How can I check if my details are secure?
Every time you fill out personal or recruitment details on our site, your browser is switched to "secure mode", to encrypt the information that you send to us. To verify you are in a secure part of the site, look at the bottom bar of your internet browser. You should see a closed padlock.
