Making Waitrose groceries even more affordable

OCADOLIFE 08 - March 2009

When we started Ocado in January 2000, our dream was to create a completely new way to shop for groceries. We believed that a combination of world-class groceries and incredible service would wow UK shoppers bored of the same old trolley dash – that’s why we chose to launch Ocado in partnership with Waitrose.

But to provide a real alternative to the supermarkets, we knew we had to provide outstanding value too. After all, online retailers, from book sellers to travel agents, offer lower prices than high street shops, but UK grocery prices have traditionally been the same or higher on the Internet. We just didn’t think that was right.

We can do this because we don’t have any stores; just one terribly efficient warehouse and some little delivery centres (where our eco-friendly delivery vans live when they’re not bringing your shopping right to your front door). This helps us to drive our costs down, which, in turn, means that we can make all your favourite groceries even more affordable.

2009 might be shaping up to be another tough year for all of us, but the fightback definitely starts right here at Ocado.
