About Bart Spices

About us & history

Building on their successful spice rack business, Reg and Jo Bartlam discovered that people were demanding more than just empty bottles in their spice racks and began Bart Spices in 1963.

From humble beginnings, the business has grown over the last 50 years; today a team of people travel the world finding new and exciting ingredients. Back at Bart's base in Bristol, our culinary experts work with flavours to create herb harmonies and spice symphonies which add an extra touch of magic to home cooked dishes.

The Bart product range encompasses herbs, spices, spice blends, baking ingredients, sauces, dips and marinades and our range is constantly growing - from inception in 1963, there are now over 350 products available on shelves and online.

By working with suppliers in different corners of the world, we have come to realise that not all ingredients are equal and a myriad of reasons can change the flavour profiles of our favourite spices. For example, a Lampong peppercorn from Indonesia is going to taste completely different to a Telicherry one from India, but there will be some blends where each is a better choice. We consider all this when we create our spice mixes so you don't need to worry that your tagine is too tangy or your curry too spicy.

Because we're cooks too, we know the fun that can be had with adding a sprinkle of this or a dash of that to your favourite dishes so why not pepper your pies with paprika or marinate your meat in marjoram and mace?
