Sourcing

Trading fairly and ethically with farmers isn't simply desirable - it's essential. Union directly source and actively sustain long-term, stable and mutually beneficial producer relationships. Working directly with the producers themselves, we offer advice and support, to maximise the characteristics of our coffees and proudly attain a diverse, unique range of exquisite coffees.

Our sourcing policy is comprehensive and applies to all farmers:-

We treat each farmer individually, drawing up a specific agreement which is based on the farmer's needs for the coming year and the development projects they are involved in.

We believe that in a world of 25 million producers, one price cannot fit all.

These relationships work both ways. In return for our fair premiums, we want everyone associated in the production of the coffees we source to benefit.

So we make personal visits to ensure producers achieve a rigorous set of criteria governing environmental, social and labour standards.

Of course we recognise many producers need assistance in improving their working practices, so we continue to engage with them throughout the year, sometimes liaising through local developmental non-governmental organisations if necessary. Which consequently means every coffee with a 'direct trade' Union mark guarantees outstanding coffee with great taste as well as good soul.
