Product Description

Chateau Segonzac Oak Aged
Premieres Cotes de Blaye - Appellation d'Originale Controlee

Deep colour and pure aromas of blackcurrant and raspberry, overlain with vanilla and spice notes from the oak maturation. A soft-textured wine, with sufficient tannins to make it a pasrticularly good match for lamb or beef. A severe selection ensured only the healthiest and ripest grapes were chosen to make this exceptional wine.

Already a Cru Bourgois estate in the 19th-c., Chateu Segonzac is now considered to be a leading property in the Premieres Cotes de Blaye.
This wine, a Special Cuvee of only 32400 bottles, has been specially blended and selected by Benoit Calver and Thomas Herter, who have a lifetime of winemaking experience in Bordeaux, and has been oak aged for at least 9 months.

Alc. 14.5% Vol.

Be careful the info is wrong!

we have been buying 13.5% max wine which is what this wine is described as on the web site but it says on the bottle 14.5% !! and does taste very heavy and too alcoholic

A decent claret

Something is puzzling me here. This bottle says on the front, "Grand vin de Bordeaux" - that only means that the wine is made somewhere in the department of Gironde - the words 'grand vin' signify nothing. On the back it says, rather more precisely, 'Blaye - Cotes de Bordeaux", while also describing itself as "a leading property in the Premieres Cotes de Blaye". That's fine - "Premieres Cotes de Blaye" is a now defunct appellation, which has been absorbed into "Cotes de Bordeaux", but allowed to add the word "Blaye". Hugh Johnson's Atlas of Wine describes Segonzac as a "leading name" in Blaye, so that part's fine. But on the front of the bottle there is a large red label, bearing in capital letters the words "Cru bourgeois". And on the back label it states that it was "already a Cru Bourgeois in the 19th century". As far as I know, the Cru Bourgeois classification only applies to properties in the Medoc, and was only drawn up in 1932, so what does that label mean? It's a mystery. That aside, this is a pretty decent claret at the price. 60% merlot, 20% cab sauv, 20% malbec. Very attractive nose, of plum with hints of cigar box, earth and toffee. Doesn't quite deliver on the palatte. It's very smooth, but a bit lacking in depth. Regardless, it's a very pleasant wine.
