Informative and balanced
'Computer Active' is a truly excellent magazine that successfully bridges the divide between beginner and experienced computer engineer. I may not need some of their simpler tutorials, but there is much there for me that more than justifies the less-than-two-quid cover price. It is cheerful without being saccharine, keeps well up to date with the news, provides reasoned comment and covers all flavours of computer from Apple to Windows via many popular versions of Linux. It also produces occasional special editions that focus on specific areas. These are worth watching for, since they are very well done. It is pitched at a less technical level than the excellent 'Micro Mart', and tends to avoid in-depth hardware/software articles as a result, but that is entirely appropriate to its remit. Those who enjoy tinkering with PCs and software may prefer Micro Mart, but I find it hard to choose and usually buy both. For many years now, 'Computer Active' has been deservedly endorsed by the Plain English Campaign. Need one say more? Highly recommended for those with any interest in computers - or the need to understand them a bit better.
