Product Description

Dina Baklawa: A selection of Mediterranean Confectionery.

Dina is a family owned company founded in 1992. It produces quality foods to traditional eastern Mediterranean recipes. Baklawa is one of these.

Considered by many as the world's most scrumptious pastry, these heavenly flavoured sweets were developed by the Assyrians around the 8th century BC. A variety of fruit and nuts enhances the flavour and, when coated with sugar syrup, smothered in clarified butter and encased within sheets of dough known as "filo", this combination results in a mouth-watering treat.

Adopted and adapted by the Greeks, Armenians, the Turks and even the Romans, filo pastries have graced the tables of some of history's most famous figures and were baked only on special occasions, usually for the rich who could afford such a luxury.

Baklawa: Whole nut pistachio sandwich between filo pastry.
Namoura: Baked semolina and coconut confection topped with an almond.
Kulwuskur: Filo pastry folded sandwich with minced cashew cut into half-moons.
Bourma: Whole nuts bound in crunchy, golden brown shredded wheat.
Assabee: Filo pastry stuffed with minced cashew nuts and soaked in syrup.
Boukage: Square layers of filo pastry filled with cashew nuts and soaked in syrup.
Chocolate Baklawa: Traditional baklawa covered with 1million Dark / Light Chocolate.
Walnut Baklawa: Filo pastry sandwich with walnut fillings.
Cashew Triangle: Filo pastry sandwich with cashew or almond nuts.

This assortment may vary due to seasonal availability.

why add the chocolate?

These were an awesome and delicious treat but now they've added chocolate even my choc loving hubby says"yuck". I'm allergic to cocoa so can't eat it anymore. Much sadness.

Delicious, thanks Ocado for stocking this

Well, I first tried those while shopping at Sainsbury's and found they were pretty amazing but there are only seasonally stocked so I normally get to eat them once in a blue moon. Couldn't find them anywhere out of "season". Thanks a lot to Ocado, I have been abusing them in the past few days! Really lovely sweets, the best I have tried from a supermarket, I think it's worth giving it a go despite the bad review I read here, because you never know how it might taste to you. Cheers

Pretty Good

I find it quite hard to find decent baklawa without having to pay a small fortune for it. For a supermarket, this selection is very decent with a cup of mint tea if you fancy a change from the normal biscuits/cake. Very good value for what you get!

the only flavour is vegetable oil

I was very excited about reading the good reviews and looked forward to the delivery, however, it turned out to be terribly disappointing, either it's gone downhill dramatically or the previous reviewers never tried any nice baklawa. The ingredient list only mentions ghee, no vegetable oil, but it tasted overwhelmingly of vegetable oil, each piece was dripping with it. I really would like it to be sent off to a laboratory to check on their claim that the only fat in it is ghee. Sometimes these types of Eastern treats can be cloying, but these had the opposite problem, didn't have enough sweetness. In spite of being soaked in oil, the pastry was too hard, a bit like eating straw or shredded paper. Each member of my family -5 of us- tried some, and everyone either said it tasted of nothing, or was too oily. Couldn't even finish the box. If it wasn't for the rules on reviews I'd say where to buy much nicer baklawa, look towards well-known German chains.

Authentic baklave

The first time I bought these there was one with ginger in the selection which was absolutely delicious, sadly hasn't featured in the ones I've bought since. The chocolate ones aren't great as the chocolate is pretty poor which is authentic - chocolate is not a strong point in the countries of origin of baklava!. I'm not very keen on the little semolina cake squares either. The standard baklava is just lovely though, good quality and authentic.
