A Total Winner

Vintage 2009. An excellently made wine which offers such good quality for the price and, thank goodness, is presented with a cork closure. Call me old fashioned but screw tops should be banned - especially for higher end wines. Although this wine is not one hundred per cent Tempranillo, I beggar anyone to find me a Rioja style wine which offers as much in terms of bouquet, flavour and smoothness for the price. The cepage of six gape varieties and four years age with thirteen months in new oak, results in pure pleasure on the palate.

Moderately pleasant

I don't like to swim against the crowd, but I do like Mont Gras Carmenere and I flatter myself that I'm serving this at the correct temperature, and this strikes as no better than moderately pleasant. Colour is a deep purple-red. Aroma is quite reticent, although it opened up a little on the second day. Lots of smoky oak, with a rather pleasant hint of violet. Dark fruit on the palate, with a bit of jam, and a little too much tannin. Perfectly quaffable and went well with my pizza, but hardly exciting.
