Product Description

GAIL's Spelt Sunflower Loaf

As diehard bakers, we love wheat; but we know that not everyone celebrates it the way we do. This clever little loaf is made from spelt, an ancient ancestor of wheat with a higher nutritional value. It's a great alternative if you're after a healthy loaf, but it's not gluten-free.

About GAIL's
GAIL's believes in the art of honest breadmaking. We start with just four simple ingredients: flour, water, salt and yeast, and we never add artificial colours or flavours. Instead, we seek out the best ingredients from where they're best, whether it's hand-peeled Bramley apples from Britain, single source unsalted butter from France, or plump juicy olives from Mediterranean groves. All our loaves are made by hand too, so we never need to add the stabilisers and preservatives that are an unavoidable fact of industrialised bread.

Our selection of classic and globally-inspired artisanal breads includes a range of sourdoughs made from 15-year old wild yeast starters. Allowed to rise slowly and naturally, these loaves take 48 hours to make and possess a mature taste and character that a mechanically processed loaf couldn't hope to match.

Worst bread ever

Felt stale two days before best before date!

hard

I brought this from Waitrose the other week and thought it was hard and also very small. Make a fresh one in a bread machine and it's light and soft.

disappointing

Loads of sunflower seeds in the loaf, inside and out, but it was much smaller than I expected and very solid - it reminded me of the wholemeal "bricks" from the 1970's. I do normally eat sunflower bread but our usual loaf has a more open texture and toasts much better. I was very surprised to read reviews written by people who said they could not normally eat bread - presumably because they have coeliac disease. This bread DOES contain gluten so may well NOT be suitable for such a diet. I would not buy this product again.

tiddly little brick.

Made me think of Terry Pratchett's dwarf bread as so dense and small. Toasted ok. Munching away on the end bits made my jaw ache.
