Pale yellow colour with green hues. The aroma is fresh and vibrant with a base of rich tropical fruit but dominated especially when young, by fresh lime and lemongrass aromas as well as a fresh herb note. The palate shows a lovely fruit weight on the mid palate with flavours reminiscent of gooseberry and citrus and this is surrounded by a juicy, pure acidity giving the wine its zesty exuberance with a fresh, dry finish.

History

There is a strength of character and determination about Giesen brothers Theo, Alex and Marcel who, despite the naysayers, made the bold leap to make wine in Marlborough in 1981. Over the last 30 years they have laid deep roots in the region, developing their own vineyards and simply making wines that people want to drink and that, is all there is to it. It is this staunch approach to consistency, with their passion always driving excellence that has enabled them to become one of the regions eminent producers.

Regional Information

Sitting in the top right-hand corner of New Zealands South Island, Marlborough is framed by picturesque waters and snow-capped mountains. Its highly sought-after Wairau Valley is an ancient river bed nestled between two mountain ranges and bordered to the North by Cook Strait. Its a finite sub-region within the acclaimed Marlborough wine growing belt.

Vinification Details

The growing season leading up to vintage 2011 ensured the vines were in excellent health with plenty of warm weather in December with regular rain. Most vineyards were pruned to 3 canes so cropping levels were maintained at moderate levels which was just as well considering the favourable growing conditions. Once the 2011 vintage started it was evident the flavour of the fruit on the vines had developed very well so we could often harvest a little earlier than usual at lower sugar levels therefore producing a wine with moderate alcohol. We had very little rain during harvest and the fruit was exceptionally clean, so picking decisions were relatively straight forward. The separate batches are fermented relatively cool using selected aromatic yeast strains. Our 2011 blend comes from 32 separate parcels spread the length and breadth of Marlboroughs Wairau Valley.

Middle of the road

Quite drinkable plonk at a middle-market price, and very consistent. If you want something more special, buy from a specialist and/or pay more.

Nice Wine

Slight effervescent which you would expect from a decent bottle of Marlborough - just love it. Even if you do not drink it all immediately, even the next evening it is good......

ok

Not bad but not the best Sauvignon blanc either...perfectly drinkable but had an unusual fizz to it. Won't buy again.

perfect sav blanc

Slightly frizzante with the classic flavours and tightness you would expect from the more expensive Malborough NZ sav balances like Oyster Bay. I'm stocking up for the summer!

Great wine - now one of favourites!

Great wine, not too sweet or floral as some can be. Perfect for this hot weather!
