Clean
Schweppes' standard tonic contains artificial sweeteners. Compared with the Waitrose product, which doesn't, the brand leader has a plasticky flavour: quite horrid. There are a few other specialist tonics, but none really comes close to Waitrose's. Fentimans tastes like lemonade. Fever Tree is OK. But the Essential Waitrose one is our favourite by far. It lets the flavour of the gin (BS, of course) shine through. And we are all keeping our Bombay in the deep freeze, aren't we? A tepid G&T is nearly as bad as one polluted with aspartame and saccharine. -20 won't crack the bottle - but -40 probably would. Watch out for the moment, at just the right two temperatures, when tonic into sub-zero gin produces perfect six-pointed ice crystals.

shhh - this is even better than the big names!
This really is lovely tonic water, without the cloying taste of artificial sweeteners. I was so disappointed when, a few weeks ago it was shown as out of stock and we had to switch to Sch..... for a week or two. I enjoy a good G&T - gin straight from the freezer, three ice cubes and a single slice of lemon in a chilled glass - and it was quite a relief to see Waitrose's own brand in stock again

Best By Far - and I should know
I've tried every Tonic Water under the sun and this is by far the best - even in Blind Tasting. It's bitter and crisp, with a lovely zingy edge to it. I won't make a G&T with anything else. Totally recommend it.
