Recipe Suggestion
Traditional Lasagne
Serves 4-6
9-12 sheets lasagne
2 Tablespoon Parmesan Cheese, grated
Meat Sauce
1 onion, finely chopped
1 carrot, finely chopped
1 stick of celery, finely chopped
2 gloves of garlic, peeled and crushed
1 tablespoon olive oil
50g smoked streaky bacon, chopped
450g lean minced beef
150ml red wine
4 tablespoons tomato purée
400g canned, chopped tomatoes
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
Freshly ground black pepper
Béchamel Sauce
1 bay leaf
1 small onion, halved
500ml milk
50g butter
50g plain flour
Grated nutmeg
Freshly ground black pepper
Fry onion, carrot celery and garlic in oil until the onion softens
Add the bacon and mince and cook until browned
Stir in the remaining meat sauce ingredients, bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes
Meanwhile heat the bay leaf, onion and milk together to just below simmering point. Leave to infuse off the heat for a few minutes. Strain.
Melt the butter, add the flour and stirring well after each addition.
Stirring continuously, bring the sauce to the boil, then simmer for 1-2 minutes until it has thickened. Add the nutmeg and seasoning to taste.
Spoon a layer of meat sauce, then bèchamel sauce, then lasagne.
Repeat this process covering the lasagne with a final layer of bèchamel sauce.
Sprinkle with parmesan cheese then bake at 180°C or gas mark 4 for 30 - 35 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling.
Serve with crusty bread and a crisp green salad
Wash hands, all surfaces and utensils after touching raw meat.

Do not buy these

Without doubt these are the worst lasagne sheets I have ever used - very thin, snap easily and the texture becomes stodgy and sticky when cooked. Dreadful. Worth spending more on the better quality versions.

Too starchy

These sheets are far too starchy. They left the lasagne tasting as if I had used cardboard instead of pasta. I won't be buying these again.

Not the real thing

I bought these instead of proper Italian lasagne once but will never do so again. The texture is just not right, maybe not enough egg in the dough? I would recommend you spend a little more and get better quality sheets instead. PS I am Italian

make up your mind what size they are

Which is it, large crinkly and difficult to fit into a dish or small flat and much easier to fit. I stopped buying the crinkly ones and resumed buying them when they changed to smaller and flat. I was exceptionally irritated to get the large and crinkly ones when the photo shows otherwise.
