Product Description

Shiraz - Red Australian Wine
Full Bodied

Tasting Notes: Dense black centre with a deep garnet rim. The nose shows lashing of dark plums and chocolate with hints of mint. A wine of great dignity, its structure is superbly taut, with intense depth of fruit reined in by the firm tannins. As befits a wine made in strictly limited quantities, this is a wine for posterity and may be cellared with confidence.

Vinification Details: Fermented & macerated on skins for up to 2 weeks with some partial barrel fermentation. After pressing and clarification, matured in 90% French and 10% American oak hogsheads for approx 14 months.

History: The story of Stonewell Shiraz began in 1987 when Peter Lehman decided to make a special Shiraz - a wine of immense intensity and muscularity that would demand time in barrel and bottle before release. The wine was named 'Stonewell' after the district that he believed best showed the characters admired most in Barossa Shiraz.

Regional Information: Extremely low yielding mature vineyards in the hard country Barossa Valley districts of Ebenezer, Stonewell, Light Pass, Moppa and Tanunda.

Vintage 2008
Peter Lehmann
A True Story
When Peter Lehmann started making wine in 1980, he only made one Shiraz. Over following years, he noted the consistently high quality of local vineyards but a select few were producing exceptional fruit, more intense, muscular, and deeper in colour. Those special grapes, nicknamed 'little black jewels' by Peter and Chief Winemaker Andrew Wigan, were set aside for special treatment and crafted into the finest wine of vintage. They called it Stonewell after the district they believed showed the characters most admired in Barossa Shiraz.
The pedigree of these vineyards - and the knowledge that has been passed from each grape growing generation to the next - assures us that Stonewell Shiraz is a wine of great longevity that can be cellared with confidence for many years to come. The 'little black jewels' represent only a small fraction of Barossa Shiraz produced by Peter Lehmann, a quantity that is dictated entirely by the quality of each vintage.

Got the 2008 instead

Placed order for 2007, got 2008 instead, therefore can only comment on the 2008. The only thing nice is the deep colour. A very light hint of chocolate, herb and raspberry, strong bitter plum aroma. Palate is very bland, does not match with the deep colour, too bland for shiraz. Given the hype about 2007, I think the 2008 must be so different from the 2007 - which I have not tried myself. Finishing is some of the worst among its peers, with very uncomfortable tannins and bitter grape / orange seeds flavour that stage in your mouth for a long time. hint of cigar box and leather. Decanted for 3 hours, slight soft sediment found, flavour did not improve. A fair PRE-DISCOUNTED price for a wine of this quality would be around £16 per bottle. Personally, I would not buy it again, even it drops below £10. You can easily find comparable taste / quality wines at a discounted price of £9.99.

Excellent value for a great wine

For most of us this isn't an every day wine but it certainly is delicious. Very heavy and dark, it is as good on its own as it is with a meal.

A cracking Aussie

This is a superbly rich and concentrated wine. One of the finest Shiraz wines I've tasted. Leave it open for 3 hours or more before drinking, it gets better with time. Great with roast beef.
