The history of the bagel.
Legend has it that in 1683 a Jewish master baker in Vienna baked a bread, shaped like riding stirrup ('beugel'), as a gift of thanks to the King of Poland who helped the Austrians defend themselves against a Turkish assault.
Bagels appeared in Russia where they were said to bring good luck.
In Poland, they were bought as gifts for women in childbirth and used as teething rings for babies.
At the end of the 19th century, Jewish emigrants from Europe brought the bagel to the US and Canada. Many settled in New York which became the bagel 'capital' of the world.

Dire
The usual high standard of waitrose essential is gone here. Both texture and taste are dreadful.

Can barely believe they're still being sold.
Have tried these and other own label bagels on more than one occasion and they are always the same. Dry, stale and taste free. Not even the dog likes them.

Dreadful
I would have thought a pair of sundried carpet slippers would have more taste - abysmal. Stick to the new York bagels. Mine were almost stale due to the very close use by date. Ocado kindly gave me 2 days to consume 10 bagels.
