Bread Swirls

This basic bread recipe is made more enticing by the addition of either sundried tomato paste, pesto or tapenade. 

Children will be able to help make the dough and knead it.  Rolling the bread dough into sausages and spreading the paste and making them into swirls should keep them occupied for a while and they'll have a great sense of achievement at the finished result.

Instructions

    Place the flour, salt, sugar, oil and yeast into a large mixing bowl.

    Add 400ml of warm water and mix to form a dough. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky, if it's too sticky add a little more flour, if too dry add a little more water.

    Knead the dough for 10 minutes until smooth and stretchy.

    Split the dough into 12 pieces, roll each piece into a sausage shape and flatten them.

    Spread the sundried tomato paste, tapenade or pesto along the flattened part and roll up into a swirl.

    Place each swirl into a baking tray so you can see the swirl, cover the baking tray with clingfilm or a damp tea towel and leave in a warm place for 45 minutes to 1 hour until doubled in size.

    Pre heat the oven to 220oc/gas mark7, remove the clingfilm and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown, eat warm or cold.

    Aga: Roasting oven shelf in the middle for 12-15 minutes.

  • 650g Strong white bread flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 sachet Easy blend dried yeast
  • 1 pack Sundried tomato paste, tapenade or pesto
