Mendocino County is vast and diverse, shaped by mountainous terrain and strong Pacific influence, which prevents a single, unifying terroir despite its Mediterranean climate. The western areas are cool and fog-driven, suitable only at higher altitudes, while moving east brings warmer days tempered by evening fog through river wind gaps. The far east, largely shielded from ocean cooling, is Mendocino's warm “banana belt,” capable of ripening virtually any grape variety.

The grapes are gently pressed. The juice is then clarified prior to fermentation. Fermentation is initiated via inoculation with a specialised Chardonnay yeast strain and proceeds over approximately two weeks at an average temperature of 55 °F (13 °C). Approximately half of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. 30% of the wine is aged for six months on American oak, with medium to medium-plus toast levels, contributing subtle notes of spice and structure.
