Most manufacturers recommend replacing the hot water bottle every two years to ensure safety, as rubber can degrade over time. Look for a daisy wheel on the bottle which indicates the year of manufacture.

Do not use boiling water and fill to a maximum of two-thirds capacity or less

Screw the stopper sufficiently tight to ensure that there is no leakage.
When not in use, drain completely and keep, with the stopper removed, in a cool, dry, dark place.
