Other Information

Handpicked grapes were whole bunch pressed and the free run component of the juice filled to French oak for spontaneous/wild fermentation. A small juice portion completed fermentation and maturation in stainless steel to preserve additional primary fruit. All barrels were tasted weekly to monitor the increasing complexity and malolactic activity as lees stirring was introduced. Barrels were sulphured on lees at various stages through maturation to capture
fruit brightness.

Brand details

Taking its name from the Wachau vineyard area that it calls home, Domäne Wachau is one of the iconic producers of this breathtakingly beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its terraced vineyards are strung along the steep banks of the Danube river, on a patchwork of terroirs that provide endless nuance to the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling grapes that grow there. Headed up by Master of Wine Roman Horvath, this dynamic co-operative cultivates around a third of all the vineyards in the Wachau region and is a model for sustainable winemaking and grower collaboration.

History

Domäne Wachau
The Domäne Wachau is more dynamic than ever before since the duo Horvath and Frischengruber have taken the fate of this winery into their hands. Within just a short period of time the Domäne Wachau has risen to be among the very top wine producers in Austria. Great attention is given the diversity of the Wachau vineyards. Handcraft, typicity and character of origin are the prime focus. Manual labour, biodiversity and sustainable development in the vineyard and gentle vinification with minimal intervention are the practiced ideals.

Regional information

Chosen for their specific microclimate and meagre primary rock soils, the vineyard sites for Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Terrassen were carefully hand-picked from steeply terraced vineyards throughout the Wachau valley. It exhibits a very typical and consistent style of Grüner Veltliner from Wachau characterized by fresh fruit and a pronounced minerality.

Tasting notes

Bright yellow-green in colour, this wine offers distinctive aromas of green apple, white pepper, hints of mango, balanced with delicate herbal notes. This Federspiel is a traditional example of Grüner Veltliner with its medium-body crisp acidity, juicy fruits and white spice on the finish.

Vinification details

The vines are cultivated in the classical Lenz Moser-trellis system with an average yield of 8.000 kg/ha. The grapes for this wine were handpicked between the end of September and beginning of October. Our modern grape reception system enables us to select only 100% healthy grape material. Gentle pressing, sedimentation overnight, temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel define the vinification process. A moderate reductive treatment guarantees a fresh and fruity, yet well-structured wine.
