70s Vibe
Purchased the pie as I remembered having these on the numerous camping holidays we had when I was a child. I am not sure if it was pie was better in the 70s, or whether it was the fact that my mother's cooking was terrible and anything she didn't have a hand in, tasted amazing! Unfortunately, I couldn't eat the pie as the meat was really chewy and the pastry was beyond crispy. Needless to say, I was disappointed that I will never again look back fondly, at the memory of a Fray Bentos Minced Beef and Onion Pie. My mother's cooking never improved, so I learned how to cook instead )
Could not open
Despite my best efforts with my two robust, good quality can openers I had to admit defeat and bin the pie in its half opened tin. Now I’ve read some of the reviews I suppose I haven’t missed much.
Some things are best left in the past
I bought this for a trip down nostalgia lane, to my mym's awful cooking in the 70's. I had fond memories of these pies, but they have been obliterated by contact with reality. This is awful food. Hardly a pie, just some unpleasant crispy crust approximating pastry and a small amount of meat-flavoured sludge inside that tasted like it had zero beef content. Awful. Avoid.
A case of unfinished \x27case\x27.
I first experienced one these pies over 50 years ago and the problem which I noted then still exists today. Beyond the first mm or two of the crust - by the way it isn't a 'pie' because a pie requires completely enveloping the filling which these don't - is that the crust simply doesn't cook.
Absolutely horrible
Check ingredients with the amount of meat in it and leave it at that. Absolutely tasteless watery goo, reminding of a cat or dog food, no base to the pie as well. Worst ever.
Wow, that's amazing!
I was very skeptical of pie-in-a-can at room temperature, but I gave it a go and wow! Delicious with tasty pastry! Nothing weird or fancy, just a lovely meat and gravy pie. I'm going to stock up for the next time I need a fast, easy dinner from the pantry.
