Product Information

Jackson Estate Vintage Widow is named in recognition for the families who are often forgotten at vintage as we strive to make the perfect Pinot Noir. Founded over two decades ago our philosophy remains the same; to handcraft wines using the best modern techniques, respect our vineyard sites, and maintain varietal integrity.

The grapes are handpicked from our oldest vines in our unirrigated, claybound Somerset and Gum Emperor vineyard blocks in Marlborough's southern valleys. Matured for ten months in 100% French oak barriques and showing concentrated red and black fruits overlaid with dried herbs, spice and cedar on the nose, with complex savoury and spice on the palate. The wine is rich, elegant and textural.

Please drink responsibly: The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend adults do not regularly drink more than 14 units per week

Other Information

The fruit was whole bunch loaded to press and cut to taste by the winemaker, with 75% of the juice going to barrel with a high proportion of solids and 25% remaining in stainless tanks. The barrel portion contained 25% new oak with the rest made up of 2–5-year-old barrels. Fermentation was carried out in both stainless tanks and French barrels by indigenous yeasts and reached a maximum temperature of 25°C. The young wines remained on their ferment lees over winter and began natural malolactic fermentation in the spring. Aged for 12 months in oak, the barrel batch was racked, assessed, and blended with the aged tank portion and prepared for bottle Mid-April.

Tasting notes

Lifted aromatics of brambly red fruits overlay a background of dried herbs, spice and leather. To taste, the flavour profile is a combination of savoury density and rich, ripe flavours, all without losing precise Pinot Noir detail. Tannins are silky and integrated, leaving an impression of texture, concentration and not least, definitive vineyard and southern Marlborough clays character.

Vinification details

Each parcel was destemmed into small open tank fermenters retaining a substantial proportion of whole berries. A pre-fermentation soak averaging 5 days preceded a warm and rapid indigenous fermentation where temperatures spiked between 30-33 degrees Celcius. All batches were hand plunged as per winemaker instruction. Post-primary fermentation the young wines averaged 14 days on skin totalling up to 30 days before being pressed to a mixture of new and older French Oak barrels for natural malolactic fermentation and maturation. In February each batch was gently tasted and assessed before bottling in early March 2020.
