Originating in 1940s Detroit, USA, the deep dish pizza was created by a local restaurant owner who made a batch of his mother-in-law's Sicilian focaccia dough in a rectangular automotive factory pan. Topped with cheese and sauce, it developed a thick, airy base and iconic crispy, caramelised cheese edge that's still enjoyed around the world today.
