Product Information
Mortlach 20YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky was tamed for 20 years to be worthy of an outstanding Mortlach whisky. In 1973, a treasure was found at Glenrinnes Lodge, on a hill near the Mortlach Distillery. The discovery was made by the daughter of Dr. Alexander Cowie, who had invented Mortlach's unique 2,81-fold distillation method. During renovation work in the north wing of the grand old lodge, a wooden box was found, and inside, carefully wrapped in straw, twelve bottles of a whisky that had long been forgotten by the people. It was Alexander Cowie's private stock - an incredibly complex whisky from 1909. No doubt Cowie had bottled the best his distillery had to offer, at the time, and sealed it with a label in a noble hue that now adorns every Mortlach whisky bottle. This is the new generation of Cowie's Blue Seal. We have matured one of our finest single malt scotch whiskies for at least 20 years to tame the Beast of Dufftown and give it a soft, voluminous texture. Dr. Alexander Cowie would be proud of this whisky.

Big flavour without big smoke
"Its character harks back to a time when whiskies were bigger, bolder, darker.
It is the earthy, meaty roots of Speyside. Its flavour is not what people expect from Speyside but it is a flavour which is gaining in popularity – and is rarely found.
At the foundation of many famous blends is this throwback to the old days, to days before Dufftown even existed.
It is the dark reduction of whisky to some primal essence.” Dave Broom, Whisky Writer

Recipes
The Beast of Dufftown Mortlach’s big flavour without big smoke flavour profile is very different to other single malts from Speyside, leading Dave Broom to refer to it as ‘The Beast of Dufftown’.
