This is NOT piccalilli
No onions, no gherkins...this is NOT piccalilli, it's just a silly attempt to be different. Thank goodness UK laws require the ingredients to be displayed.
no onions
No this isn't the greatest piccalilli ever but it doesn't contain onions and practically ever other pickle/chutney does so if you can't eat onions and don't make your own this is hugely welcome.
Nice jat
Elegantly presented in an attractive jar, artistically mottled with red squares and reassuringly expensive the only things this pickle lacks are flavour and texture. The only evidence of mustard is the yellow colour. It isn't crunchy, it isn't sharp and it isn't hot. But if you want gloopy sweet muck the jar does look really special.
Oh dear \- sweet, lingering taste of red peppers
This was always my go to piccalilli - a sharp, mustard pickle with crunchy onions, cauliflower, green beans. This is a sweet pickle, no vinegar, no mustard and soggy veg including carrots, red and green peppers. It is not very nice and adds absolutely nothing to a ploughman’s or cheese sandwich. Will not order it again.
Beware \- Two types
There are two types of Bay Tree piccalilli: Punchy (sweet but crunchy and really mustardy - love it); Perfectly Punchy (soggy, vinegary, still sweet but no turmeric/mustard taste so in my view not really piccalilli at all. I thought I was getting the first but received the second. Can see it sitting in the fridge for a while.
All sweet & no punch
Tried this as the M&S one has been out of stock for months. As sweet as a ketchup with absolutely no vinegar taste at all. If thats your thing then grab one but for me it made for a disappointingly bland sandwich
