Brand details

Marisco Vineyards takes its name from proprietor Brent Marris' notorious ancestors; the de Mariscos, who in the 12th and 13th centuries inhabited Lundy Island, off England's south-west coast. The Kings Series wines were created to celebrate the scandalous stories of those ancestors...

The King's Legacy 2018 Marlborough Chardonnay
The de Mariscos apparently descended from a William de Marisco (approximately AD 1100), who was said to be one of the 35 illegitimate children of King Henry the First - thereby making William part of the King's Legacy.
The de Mariscos continued a rocky relationship with the monarchy in subsequent generations, ultimately ending with the tragic execution of a later William for piracy and his alleged involvement in a treasonous plot.

History

Brent Marris, Marlborough born and raised, spent years as a youngster exploring the landscape of his home region. He put that exploration to good use when, in 2003, he started his search for a vineyard property. The site he chose was 268ha of vineyards on the banks of the Waihopai River, on the southern side of the Wairau Valley. From here, Brent started Marisco Vineyards and achieved international success with his wines, most notably with his flagship brand “The Ned”.

Vinification details

With one of the warmest starts to a growing season since records began, all of the industry talk was of a super early, highly condensed harvest. Consistently
above average temperatures through September, October and November combined with typical spring rainfall meant an excellent start to the season, with
a near perfect bud burst and optimum growing conditions for strong canopy development.
