The sole example of squirrel and hazelnut tree is held in our William Morris Gallery archive; originally designed to set into a fire screen, the embroidery with its intricate details and expertly crafted design, is attributed to may Morris, the talented daughter of William Morris.
The embroidery reflects the skilled ability to interpret nature displayed by the female embroiderers our heroines for 2026. The William Morris gallery exhibition “women in print” amplifies the importance of women in the history of pattern and design and links with oak & willow bringing natural dyes, intricate detail and a valuable female eye to a thoughtful, festive collection.
