Daylight robbery for compounded hing
It is what it is. Its quite rare to find pure hing powder anymore as its mostly shipped in a diluted compound like this. Advice is that if your recipe calls for a pinch youll need a tsp of this.
Hardly smells of asafoetida \- super weak
Used to be good, now only worth the bin.
Changed!!
This used to be awesome. I loved it even though it is expensive. But in this batch, something has changed and it doesn’t smell or taste like asafoetida. I won’t be buying again
Not pure, weak hing
This is utterly diluted now. It used to be pure hing, Id open a jar and the pungent smell used to be strong, now, nothing! They should disclose fenugreek content percentage, basically this is fenugreek powder with a small amount of hing. I paid a lot extra to get this, expected same quality as before. Now this is not even marginally better than the stuff you can get for a £1. Deceptive and expensive. Dont bother. If you know your spices, youll regret getting this one. And youll pay a hefty amount for it.
Absolutely spectacular asafoetida!
Tried ordering this on a whim as traditional Indian store brands often add some minor fillers like guar gum etc and often arent strong enough. Real Asafoetida is an amazing mild dried tree bark that has medicinal value like turmeric and essential in many Indian cuisines and curries. This stuff is amazing in khichdi, pongal, sambar, dal etc when used with the right recipe. Tip: Best if added as a seasoning to a bit of heated ghee or coconut oil when you add mustard or cumin seeds Yes its pricey but even a pinch is enough unless youre asafoetida-friendly - then like me youll enjoy the healthful indulgence. Simply the best Ive found anywhere so far!
Too expensive
Adds to the flavour of a curry, but much too expensive to be worth the price or to purchase again. I could achieve a similar effect more cheaply by adding extra onion or garlic.
