Spiced Orange Biscuits

Spiced Orange Biscuits

By OcadoLife

Get creative with these festive biscuits – and don't forget to let the children have a go too. Make them into decorations to hang on the tree by poking a hole with a skewer into the top of the stars before baking. Once out of the oven, re-insert the skewer in the same hole to clear and thread when cooled.

Ingredients

  • 100 g of light brown muscovado sugar
  • 1 medium egg
  • 1 orange, zested
  • 1 tsp of almond or vanilla extract
  • 300 g of plain flour
  • 2 tsp of mixed spice
  • 5 g of rainbow dust edible glitter (we used silver)
  • 300 g of icing sugar
  • 150 g of unsalted butter, slightly softened
  • 1 pack of disposable icing bags
  • 2 packs of gel food colours, in your choice of colours

Method

  • Step 1

Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6. Get the kids to beat together the butter and sugar for about 1-2 mins until soft and thick.
  • Step 2

Then add the egg, orange zest and extract, whisking again until blended.
  • Step 3

They can then sift in the flour and spice, and mix to form a dough. Wrap in clingfilm and pop in the fridge to firm up for 20 mins.
  • Step 4

Once firm, place the dough on a sheet of baking paper dusted with flour. Ask the little ones to roll out the dough evenly using a rolling pin. Don't let them roll too thinly – you'll want it to be about 1/2cm thick.
  • Step 5

Now, using a set of different size star cutters, start cutting out a few of each. Once as many as possible have been cut out, gather up the leftover dough, roll out and cut out again. Keep doing this until all the dough is used. Place the biscuits onto non-stick baking sheets, leaving spaces between them.
  • Step 6

Place in the oven – this is a job for grown-ups – for 12-14 mins until golden. Remove and leave to cool slightly for a couple of mins before transferring to a wire rack.
  • Step 7

Once all the biscuits are completely cool it's time to start decorating!
  • Step 8

Mix the icing sugar with with 4tbsp water to make a smooth paste. Kids can split this into three bowls, leaving one white and colouring the other two with gel colours. Then place into three separate icing bags.
  • Step 9

Decorate the biscuits how you like – we embellished them with extra glitter and silver balls.
