Veggie Sausage Rolls

Veggie Sausage Rolls

The sausage roll is a British icon, and these make-at-home Veggie Sausage Rolls are the answer to all your meat-free prayers. Just pop in your favourite brand of veggie sausage. Or, go vegan without any fuss by using vegan sausages and a plant-based milk to seal your pastry. Sausage rolls have been around for centuries, but they became popular as a street food in the UK in the 19th century. They haven’t changed much since then, other than the pastry switching from shortcrust to puff. We think they go really well with onion marmalade or a squeeze of ketchup or mustard.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of plant-based milk, to seal and glaze
  • 6 vegan or veggie sausages
  • 1 pack of ready-rolled puff pastry (320g)
  • 1 cup of onion marmalade, optional
  • 1 squeeze of ketchup, optional
  • 1 squeeze of mustard, optional

Method

  • Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Lay the pastry on a lightly floured surface.
  • Step 2

Place a sausage vertically at the top of the pastry and continue to add them until you’ve reached the other end.
  • Step 3

Roll over the pastry, trim any of the leftovers, and brush with plant-based milk to seal.
  • Step 4

To jazz up your sausage rolls, spread the pastry with onion marmalade (veggie) or with ketchup and mustard (vegan). Roll as above.
  • Step 5

Cut into 6 sausage rolls, glaze with milk, prick the tops with the point of a knife and cook for 20–25 mins.
