In early 2008, we set up a company-wide network of volunteers to make sure every inch of our warehouse, our head office and our regional depots were as ‘eco-friendly’ as possible. And lo! Our green teams were born.
These teams of eager eco-warriors have been beavering away ever since, introducing new initiatives, inspiring colleagues and helping to make us a truly green-minded business from top to bottom.
Which brings us nicely to their vision for the next 12 months. To tell you more, here’s Tom from our Hatfield CFC Green team…
In 2010 our Green teams will:
Raise green awareness
It’s easy for ‘green’ to be just a buzzword, but we want to encourage everyone to be environmentally aware, and to take their good habits home with them too. We’d also like our suppliers and service providers to be thinking green when working with us. Basically, we try to lead by example and spread the word!
Last year, we got rid of disposable cups and cutlery from our staff kitchens, which meant an end to the 100,000+ disposable cups we used to throw away every year!
Support our commitment to 10:10
Ocado was a founder member of the 10:10 campaign, and we’ll be working hard behind the scenes to make the business even more carbon efficient.
Each week, we help tens of thousands of people to move towards the goal of reducing their carbon emissions by 10% by delivering their shopping in a greener, more sustainable way.
Help our workmates to be greener
Our drive to be greener shouldn’t stop when we leave work. We want to inspire and encourage everyone at Ocado – from old hands to new starters – to reduce their personal carbon footprint however they can.
We’re planning an Ocado car share scheme, to encourage colleagues to share their commute to work and save petrol!
Bring our business together
With teams spread across the country, it can be easy to forget the huge number of people elsewhere in Ocado working towards the same goal. Having a green team in each site helps us to pool our efforts, working together to share ideas and initiatives. How energy-efficient is that?
There are over 40 Green team volunteers across the business, from personal shoppers, drivers, operations managers to head office staff and call centre agents!
Put our colleagues in the picture
We’ll keep our colleagues informed about all green initiatives within our business; encourage them to live and breathe our company’s environmental values, and help them to understand how they can reduce Ocado’s environmental impact still further.
We recycle all waste material in our warehouse and have recently installed comprehensive recycling stations across our head office.
Provide a forum for green ideas
Turning an idea into a successful project isn’t always easy. With our collective approach, our green teams will help to turn our colleagues’ good ideas into a great green reality.
We are involved in a tree-planting scheme with our recycling partner Pearce, and the first Ocado tree was planted in Marston Vale Millennium Country Park in March 2010.
