Product information

Founded in Rioja Alta in 1877, by Miguel Berberana and one of the most famous houses in Spain. Our founders aim remains true for all our wines today: "To consistently deliver the finest quality wines at an affordable price". The Berberana philosophy is to offer consumers a variety of quality Spanish wines that represent real value for money, this is at the heart of everything we do. We have no desire to be the lowest cost producer in the market, we strive to be the best value - in every sense.

Berberana is now no longer just Rioja, Berberana is Spain. Expanding from our home in Rioja Alta, we started producing wines from Vino de la Tierra de Castilla and D.O. Catalunya. In late 2013 we merged brands with one of the largest Cava producers in Spain, moving all wines from the Marques de Monistrol brand name to Monistrol by Berberana.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red in colour, showing characteristics from oak ageing. The nose is flooded with creamy vanilla, tobacco, spices and a warming, earthy core of fruit. On the palate there is a real juiciness to this wine - round, full and long.

no the style of prestiege Rioja I am used to

Old leather, bay and menthol dominate... medium-bodied no the style of rioja I am used to from the well-known prestieige brands. I would not spend £16 or even £8 on this. I think this could be from the Rioja Wine Lake surplus of poor wines.

A good one

Still fruit forward for a 2015 vintage but nicely oaked. Not as savoury as we expected (in fact there was a hint of sweetness on the finish), but overall a very good buy at the offer price.

Mouldy cork

Read online that mould was ok from a 2016 review on Rioja but still worried about it. In these days we should pay more attention to what we used to ignore

Bitter tannins

We forced ourselves through this bottle, bought as a NYE treat. Bitter tannins and unrounded flavour. Unfinished, we went to bed before midnight!

A changeling.....

Absolutely delighted with this wine when the bottle was first opened. Full bodied with a creamy flavour and a hint of tobacco and tannins. Unusually for a good red however, rather than getting better when had a chance to breathe overnight, this became more acidic, the creaminess was gone leaving only the tannins. Still very nice but not the stunning flavours when first opened.
