Converted to soap nuts! Clean clothes. Some tips.
After 3 months of use I’m never going back to washing powders and liquids. It cleans perfectly, has no toxins and is very economical. I read a few tips from previous reviewers but will summarise here. Place the soap nut bag inside a zipped mesh laundry bag. This will catch any bits of soap nut that may escape, especially if you use a high spin. Add a tablespoon of soda crystals to your detergent compartment. Add a few drops of essential oil to your conditioner compartment. I use tea tree oil but lavender is also good. I add 5 “whole” nuts per wash. Then remove any “flakes” from the bag after every wash, leaving any “nut pieces” in the bag. I then top up with a few more soap nuts before the next wash. Soap nuts can be reused if they produce a soapy liquid when squeezed. I highly recommend.
They blocked the filter
I had great hopes of this sustainable product but there are 2 main problems.. one is that the bag unties in the wash and it’s a pale ecru colour so you have to scramble through all the wet washing to retrieve it as it’s tiny. Why not a bright striped bag? Easy to locate,. The second issue is the nuts escape every so often and block the filter in my machine so I then get the floor flooded emptying the machine to get at the blocked filter. So sadly I cannot recommend. Needs a bit more sensible thought to be effective and not time consuming
Does the job
The smell of the large bag of soap nuts does not transfer to clothes. I like them because the clothes actually smell of nothing afterwards ie clean (as opposed to artificial smells in other detergents). great for wool and silk.
works well
very gentle on fabrics, we live off grid so don't want to use chemicals, these wash well:-)
fab
Used for a couple of years. Fab. I put a few drops of essential oil in rinse drawer for a tiny bit of scent.
Did not work
I was confused initially with the name soap nuts when really they are the outer shell husks, not the nut. I also think they have a strange smell. I used them as advised, any sweaty clothes still smelled sweaty and given that fact I'm not sure how clean the rest of the clothes are. I don't want to have to start adding conditioner and stain remover, as I think that defeats the whole idea of using this product. I also tried using a lot more nuts than stated but it made no difference. I think I've wasted my money and will be going back to Ecover Zero.
