Brand details

With the results of our Global Sparkling Masters 2019 out, we wanted to draw your attention to a curious, Anglo-French number from Louis Pommery that impressed the judges this year.

Pommery revealed its plans to put down roots in England in 2014, announcing a partnership with Hattingley Valley in Hampshire to use its facilities to produce the house¿s first English sparkler.

It will be several years before the Pinglestone vineyard bears fruit, with the first harvest expected in 2021 and full production from 2024, but Pommery is taking a long-term view of the project.

In the meantime, this limited edition number has already proved what Pommery is capable of producing on British soil. A smooth mousse with aromas of citrus and apple, the wine is a marriage of quality reserve wines from Hattingley and the expert blending of Pommery¿s winemaker.

It has that signature acidity and taut structure we¿re starting to see as a hallmark of English fizz, as well as the toasty, brioche-like depth we know and love about Champagne. Alongside this, a fresh lemony flavour on the palate, hints of honeycomb and a long finish will have you reaching for another glass before long.

History

Alexandre-Louis Pommery, an enlightened businessman, founded the Pommery Champagne House in 1836. Since its creation, the portfolio of Pommery champagnes is the expression of a unique and extensive know-how combining tradition with modernity. We have adapted the brand to modern times without revolutionising it, having the same unparalleled focus on the quality of our Champagnes. It is with this same quality criterion that we have created our English sparkling wine, Louis Pommery England.

Regional information

We knew that Pommery could develop an excellent quality sparkling wine in the English County of Hampshire. There, we found the same vein of chalk that runs through the Champagne region in France and extraordinary wealth of terroir. In November 2017, Pommery planted the first English vines by a Champagne company.

Since June 2021, Pinglestone Estate has been awarded the label «Sustainable Wines Of Great Britain». Preserving and enhancing the terroir, biodiversity and landscapes is key in our winemaking.

Tasting notes

Great freshness and finesse from the emerging aromas of lime, apple and pear. Beautiful notes of blackcurrant and white fruit topped with a hint of honey. The finish is long and soft with an excellent balance of sweetness and acidity.

Vinification details

The blend incorporates a majority of Chardonnay, contributing to its finesse and elegance, as well as a large proportion of Pinot Noir, which produces fruit and structure, with a touch of Pinot Meunier. The wine is made by traditional Champagne method. After ageing for the necessary time on lees, to reach the desired maturity, the sparkling wine is disgorged to remove any yeast deposits which give the wine its depth and structure.
