'There are plenty of good horseradish sauces on the market, but nothing beats making your own. I make mine – not entirely traditionally – by mixing 300ml of sour cream or crème fraiche, a teaspoon of Dijon mustard and half a teaspoon of salt together in a bowl. Then I peel the skin off about a 5cm length of the horseradish root (though don’t cut it off, as it’s easier to grate from the whole root) and duly grate it into the bowl. Stir well, adding more salt, Dijon or horseradish to taste and, just before serving, I add a generous handful of finely chopped chives. Obviously, this is made to be eaten with roast beef (hot or cold) but I love it with roast pork, too. And it’s also wonderful as a dip! And do consider grating the fresh horseradish directly onto smoked salmon, or over a lightly dressed beetroot salad or, indeed, into a beetroot soup.' Nigella Lawson

love it - amazing quality
Love real horseradish from Austria , so versatile for adding to many dishes.
Amazing Stuff!
I bought this as I am trying to cut out buying prepared jars that have added sugar because of diabetes in my family. I could not find any horseradish cream without added sugar and saw this in a search and thought I would try making a healthier version myself. I so glad I found this and will never go back to jars. I was delivered 2 large roots. Both in good condition. I grated it using the fine grate by hand. It literally made my eyes water and my throat hurt it was so strong. I might try a processor next time! I froze most of it and made a dressing with the horseradish, Greek yogurt and lemon to go with a mackerel and beetroot salad. It was so good. Creamy, hot and healthy.
I can't do the jars anymore
This was a revelation for me. Following the recommendation of a reviewer below, I followed the Leith's recipe for horseradish cream, and I can never go back to the jars. Freezes perfectly too, so no waste.
Properly strong
Got this on flash sale, and mine did show up with a bit of mold. Peeled it away, and peeled the roots like a parsnip. Figured it wasn’t that strong as I was fine after the peeling, but started grating it for the freezer. This is not weak at all. I was crying, taking breaks to step away and recover, and it just kept going. Got a pint’s worth of grating, froze it for making horseradish sauce on the day of a roast, and pretty happy with the result. Even at full price, you get a lot of horseradish, but there does seem to be quality issues.
Sealed in plastic and covered in mould
This product did not look appealing on arrival. It was wrapped in thick plastic (is this necessary?) and covered in mould. Fortunately, its size (it was the largest horseradish I'd ever seen (about 12" long and 1.5" diameter) meant that I could remove the mould covered layer and still end up with a decent amount of horseradish to add to cooking.
Thank you Ocado!
I'm Austrian and one of the delicious goodies I miss is fresh horseradish from Steiermark in Austria. When I ordered this, I had no idea that this product was actually harvested in the area of Steiermark (the description said Germany, Austria or Czech Republic). The horseradish root was so fresh, so strong (meaning it blows your head off while grating). I usually grate the whole thing and marinate it with lemon juice or vinegar and salt, then I put it in jars and leave it in the fridge. This root gave me three jar! I'm in heaven, thank you so much Ocado!
