Wasabi flavoured horseradish paste.
Aside from the fact that all of the ingredients that this company uses are of Chinese and NOT Japanese origin - despite their slogan being “Simply Japanese”, the amount of actual wasabi at just 5% is fairly okay for a tube at this price point considering Yutaka’s standard tube at 5% is almost identical in price while S&B’s cheaper wasabi contains just 4.5%. Having said that however I personally consider the aforementioned pastes to be only ‘wasabi flavoured’ horseradish paste. At this moment in time the only ‘true’ wasabi paste in supermarkets appears to be Yutaka’s more expensive “hon wasabi” containing a whopping 65% wasabi (along with the occasional wasabi fibers) and is genuinely grown in Japan, it’s true that it’s expensive but I can almost guarantee you that once you switch to it you won’t want to buy anything else! As a bizarre side note: I feel compelled to draw attention to the supposedly Japanese labeling that Saitaku use on their packaging. The Wasabi paste label reads “Ramen”, I’m not sure how this mistake was allowed to continue (even now their website uses the same imagery) or if other products are also wrong but in my house at least I remove the ‘t’ and jokingly nickname this company “Saiaku” (Japanese for awful/worst)!
Great
Im reviewing this as a free gift from Ocado. Stronger than little wasabi packets you get in supermarket sushi but not as strong as a restaurant. I did get some in my nose and it was like strong mustard levels though.
A good product
I really liked this wasabi paste and added it to mayonnaise.
its mild, doesnt give the kick
If you like it strong, this is not the one! I prefer stronger wasabi. This is too mild for my taste.
not very tasty
Bland taste
Strong, but a little too horseradishy
I know that they are the same family, but this leans a little closer to horseradish than wasabi in flavour. That being said, it’s nice and strong, texture is good, and on sale right now, so not much complaint here.
