THE STORY OF THE BLACK FARMER
Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones, The Black Farmer, is the classic poor boy, done good! After his family came to the UK in the Windrush years in the 1950s, he settled in inner-city Birmingham, as part of a large family with nine siblings, living in poverty.
Wilfred’s dad had a prized allotment where he grew vegetables that supplemented the family with much needed food. As the eldest boy it was Wilfred’s job to help tend the allotment, this experience shaped the dream of owning his own farm, a piece of the British countryside, and it was that dream that became the focus of everything he did.
This dream came to fruition with the purchase of a small farm on the Devon/Cornwall border. It was here that his Devon neighbours coined the term ‘The Black Farmer’ and this inspired him to launch his own brand – The Black Farmer.
Wilfred’s love of food spans both urban and rural ways of life and The Black Farmer brand celebrates this passion with the best of British culinary offerings.

Ignore the instructions
Firstly please ignore the instructions on the chicken. We didnt and despite both being experienced cooks we followed them and roasted the chicken for 2 hours 15 minutes. At the time I said it seemed too long but sleep deprivation took over and in it went. We now have a cremated chicken. We used a roasting bag and took it out slightly earlier but even that didnt save it. Tough, tasteless and overcooked chicken was not what we were going for. The instructions are correct on here but not on the chicken itself. Please sort it out for those of us who arent thinking straight or are inexperienced. We eat very little meat and will only eat higher welfare when we do and its a shame to have it ruined. Most will go to the foxes now.
succulent
Good size, tasty chicken. There was a fair bit of water released during cooking but not too much shrinkage. Pleased to purchase this on a flash sale but would pay full price.
lots of water!
Lots of water coming out when roasting this and so spoiling the roast potatoes. Why? Is it injected with water prior to selling ?
Wonderful!
This chicken is a great size with a good amount of succulent meat on it. The skin goes wonderfully golden and crispy when roasted
Excellent
Absolutely the best chicken I have tasted for years. Juicy, flavourful. Really good value, for the quantity and quality you get! I will definitely buy again.
Good quality
A lovely firm bird, yellow-tinged, that kept most of its weight during cooking. The result was a large amount of meat compared to cheaper birds of the same weight. A 1.8kg bird provided 4 meals for 2 people plus a couple of sandwiches. Given the higher welfare conditions and excellent taste , this is a good buy in a flash sale and I would consider it at full price depending on what I wanted to use it for.
