The Chickens environment is also enriched which encourages them to express natural behaviour and live an active lifestyle.
The Chickens are fed a nutritious organic wheat-based diet, which gives them maximum flavour and succulence.
The Black Farmer brand was launched in 2005 by Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones.
The Black Farmer is seen as one of the UK’s most inclusive and innovative brands.
Purpose driven, the company’s priority is to provide affordable premium products to all, with a mission to supply customers with exciting products that bring quality to their lives - be that higher welfare meat & poultry or the great tasting sausages that The Black Farmer is famous for.
THE STORY OF THE BLACK FARMER
Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones, The Black Farmer, is the classic poor boy, done good! After his family came to the UK in the Windrush years in the 1950s, he settled in inner-city Birmingham, as part of a large family with nine siblings, living in poverty.
Wilfred’s dad had a prized allotment where he grew vegetables that supplemented the family with much needed food. As the eldest boy it was Wilfred’s job to help tend the allotment, this experience shaped the dream of owning his own farm, a piece of the British countryside, and it was that dream that became the focus of everything he did.
This dream came to fruition with the purchase of a small farm on the Devon/Cornwall border. It was here that his Devon neighbours coined the term ‘The Black Farmer’ and this inspired him to launch his own brand – The Black Farmer.
'Wilfred’s love of food spans both urban and rural ways of life and The Black Farmer brand celebrates this passion with the best of British culinary offerings.
Whenever I do events with audience questions I tend to be asked what my Last Meal would be. My answer is shamelessly long, but always at the centre of it is Roast Chicken – and, for me, that has to be a roast Black Farmer Organic Whole Chicken. It’s not a budget buy, I freely admit, but there is no chicken better, and the taste is so intensely good that a stock made afterwards even with just one carcass creates a deeply flavoured soup. It has ruined me for all other chickens!' Nigella Lawson

Preparation and Usage
Instructions
All appliances vary, the following are guidelines only.
Pre-heat oven to 190°C, Fan 170°C, Gas Mark 5. Place chicken in a roasting tray and cover loosely with foil. Cook for the calculated time on the front of the pack (30 mins per 500g + 30 mins).
Baste occasionally during cooking.
Remove foil for the last 20 minutes to allow the skin to become golden and crisp.
To check that the chicken is cooked, insert a skewer into the thickest part of the thigh. If the juices run clear the chicken is cooked, if they run pink, return to the oven for a further 20 minutes and re-test. Check product is piping hot before serving. Do not re-heat.
Once cooked, remove from the oven. Cover the chicken with foil and allow to rest for 15 minutes before carving.

Very disappointing
Always buy organic whole chickens and decided to give this brand a try, will not be buying again. For the weight of the chicken hardly any meat on and felt very odd and rubbery to the touch
great chicken - but always below minimum weight
I love this brand and chicken but over the last few months it has consistently arrived below the minimum weight stated by ocado. We are a family of 6 so I always go for the largest chicken so this is very frustrating. It never used to happen but now I may have to go back to supermarket shopping where I can choose the weight I need myself.
British organic free range chicken
I dotted the skin with butter and seasoned, bunged it in the oven, basted once or twice, when cooked, let it rest for 15 minutes then carved, we found the chicken to be moist and flavourful and will buy again
Too dry and fatty
I followed the cooking instructions and we had a quite dry chicken. Taste was not wonderful. And this animal was so fatty the potatoes I cooked with it were far too oily. I'm happy I didn't pay full time for such a disappointing chicken.
delicious
Wow, sooooo good! Tender and full of flavour
fishy
wow , not great and why the fishy taste, wont be buying again, if your going to spend that much on a chicken buy a herd feed chicken from ocado a bit cheaper and the best you will ever taste. thank me later.
