If you haven’t yet discovered hot honey (spicy hot, not temperature hot), you’re in for a treat. Whatever you put it on or in – cheesy crumpets, pizza, ice cream, marinades – that chilli kick will make it pop.   • 454g jar runny honey
  • 2 tsp ancho chilli flakes
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 crumpets, to serve (optional)
  • 40g mature cheddar, grated, to serve (optional)


Step 1

Put the honey into a small pan with the ancho chilli flakes (or hotter ones if you prefer).

Step 2

Bring to a simmer over a low heat. Cook for 5 mins, then turn off the heat and stir in the vinegar. Leave to cool completely, then pour back into the jar, ready for drizzling over toasted cheese-topped crumpets, if you like. Store in a cool cupboard for up to 12 months.

Tips or serving suggestions

Allow extra time for the honey to cool completely before pouring it back into your jar.
