We're passionate about our Own Range fresh produce and it's all grown or harvested by people as dedicated as us. Fresh from the Source is where you'll hear the stories of the people and farms behind our monthly fresh selections. We're kicking this all off with a look at the radishes grown by Scott Watson at G's.

The Mighty Radish

Beautifully red with a satisfying crunch and lovely heat, radishes are fantastic. They're also the first outdoor salad crop of the UK growing year. The season starts in mid-April and runs all the way until late October. The hotter the summer, the hotter the radish, with a heatwave really turning up the distinctive pepperiness of this fast-growing salad mainstay.

Not only are radishes super tasty, but they also pack a mighty punch too. As well as being high in fibre and counting towards your 5-a-day, they're a source of folate and vitamin C. Folate supports the functioning of the immune system and plays a role in the normal formation of blood. That's a lot of goodness in one small vegetable.

Meet Scott,
the radish king

Over the UK season, our Own Range varieties are grown by Scott Watson of G's Growers. He's been growing radishes on the Norfolk Fens in Feltwell for over 20 years, where the fertile peaty soil retains moisture well. The farm uses a unique sub-irrigation water management system (also known as seepage irrigation), which is well-suited to radish growing. Also the surrounding dykes, hedges and trees, encourage rich biodiversity.

Early in the season, Scott tends to the maturing plants, hoping that they aren't hit by a late frost. The Feltwell farm devotes 340 hectares to radishes, which should crop around 6,000 tonnes this year, adding up to nearly half a billion radishes in total. He mostly grows Red Globe radish, with some French Breakfast and Purple Globe varieties for mixed packs.

Recently, the farm has trialled oriental varieties, like the Watermelon radish, which has a pink centre. However, Scott's favourite is probably the French Breakfast, eaten the traditional way with salt, brown bread and butter.
