Always got spare in cupboard somewhere
Nice for an instant meal if freezer looks empty.
Retro
Takes me back to my Gen X childhood. Good with a nice bit of mash and some peas. Granted it is an acquired taste.
What possessed me
I KNEW theses were bad, but every few years I decide to try one again. Cooked according to instructions, you get a very thin layer of crispy puff pastry. Underneath that is a layer of wet 'pastry' - a sort of white soft layer of goo. Under that is some glutinous gravy. And hidden in the gravy are three pea-sized pieces of what could be meat. The gravy doesn't taste of anything, especially meat. Am I wrong in thinking there used to be meat in these? Have they been veganised? The tin says "back to our classic recipe". This isn't how I remember these...
I never get a free sample
I love this pie. remove lid stick in oven turn half way through for an even rise. Never been a lot of chunks of meat in these tin pies but the gravy has smaller pieces that have broken down in the cooking. everyone loves the soft part of the pastry and make sure when I serve out that no one gets a bigger piece than the other. They have always been a bit of a treat but they have gone from £1.50/£2.00 to £3 I can't afford them
zero meat
Something has changed. The pastry was pale and dry and there was literally zero meat. Properly none. Just gravy. I know this is cheap but dont pretend the consumer will find any meat in this pie when they wont. Gravy pie is the honest description. And where is the Fray Bentos chicken and mushroom pie? This is never in stock and is their best one. Sad times.
pastry and gravy pie
very disappointing hardly any meat just pastry and gravy. should be a 99 p pie for what it is.
