Disgusting
I have recently switched from quorn (eaten for years but ultra processed) and was looking for a vegetarian mince alternative. I made a bolognese with it - out was the most revolting thing I have eaten in a long time. The texture and taste was awful.
Expensive.
This is good but expensive. Clearspring do similar organic soya mince at close to this price but for 300g, not 200g. Also on Ocado
Far superior to cheaper versions
This is made from dried, extruded soya beans and not as other cheaper versions are, highly processed industrially produced soya flour created as a byproduct of refining soya oil, or even soya protein isolates, or a mixture of both. It is expensive but a little goes a long way. The trick is to ignore the soaking and draining instructions and add direct to the sauce or recipe in question, just ensuring to carefully add more liquid to compensate for the liquid the mince will absorb in the cooking process. This does take a bit of trial and error at first, but is worth the effort.
not good
Bought this after reading the good reviews, and used it in a favourite recipe. What a disappointment and waste of other ingredients and time. Cooked according to instructions and recipe, but very unpleasant.
Good
This is a good mince. But it's pricey for the packet size. Holland&Barrett's packets are just as good but much larger. In these days of high bills, good value is key really. I would get this again, but only if I can't access cheaper options. Good mince though - does what it should and is easy to use.
Excellent in stir fry
We follow the Good Food pork mince stir fry recipe but use this instead. When adding the water to rehydrate the mince, I use just enough so as not to have excess liquid because I add Lee Kum Kee Char Siu paste, chopped garlic & ginger to allow it to soak into the mine. It cooks well, has a meaty texture and is a firm favourite in our household. Even better when it's on offer!
