Pure comfort and joy in a mug, this Chestnut Hot Chocolate from food writer and editor Caroline Morrish is a rich, dark, chocolatey treat, with puréed chestnut bringing a natural sweetness. To use up leftover chestnut purée, you could whisk it with sugar – and a little rum if you fancy – then fold into whipped cream for a special pud topping.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp chestnut purée
  • 400ml whole milk
  • 70g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 75ml Irish cream liqueur (optional)

Method

  • Step 1

    In a pan, gently heat the chestnut purée with a good splash of the milk, whisking by hand until smooth.
  • Step 2

    Whisk in the rest of the milk and heat until just starting to bubble. Add the dark chocolate and whisk until incorporated.
  • Step 3

    Add a slug of Irish cream liqueur, if you like, and divide between 2 or 3 mugs.
