Good but needs more beef fat
Triple cooked chips are the invention, after many years of experiment, of the famous chef Heston Blumenthal, and are regarded as his greatest achievement. He put great emphasis on the use of animal fat, preferring veal dripping, but almost all chefs use beef dripping, which is much more accessible. All this is well known, so it strange to see reviewers complain that they contain beef dripping. The beef dripping helps to crisp up the chips and, more importantly, enhance their flavour. These McCain chips are good, but not the best because they lack sufficient animal fat. They contain 7% vegetable oil and a mere 3% beef dripping, whereas 6% should be the absolute minimum, as contained in the M&S chips (and some others). Hence, I always add some beef dripping to secure the desired flavour. Any excess fat can be removed by putting on absorbent paper when serving. Some reviewers apparently use air fryers, even though the McCain website makes it clear they are the only chips McCain does not recommend for air fryers. The reason is obvious: the chips need to be in a thin layer of beef fat when cooking. Hence McCain’s instructions are that they should go into an oven in a single layer on a preheated deep-edged tray without holes. Air fried chips may be fine but they are not true triple cooked chips, lacking that layer of beef dripping. Why pay the higher price for premium chips only to negate the use of the ingredient deemed essential for a premium taste? One might as well buy good cheaper chips.
Love these chips
As a family these are our fave chips not the cheapest but well worth it for a treat, can be very oily but drain onto kitchen roll
Favourites
Buy these every week they are a firm favourite. Not really cheap and not healthy but who cares. Cook great in the airfryer
Horrible Greasy Chips
The title says it all! I've never seen oven chips excrete so much oil during cooking yet still remain an oily mess even after 30 minutes of cooking. Awful!
poor
Not as good as they used to be
Delicious chips.
Great bite to them, crispy but light and fluffy on the inside. Good for the whole family. Quick and easy to cook if in a hurry.
