A resounding 5 stars
Perfectly balanced taste - not too sweet not too sharp, satisfying texture, good size.
1st time tried
Read good on a cheese board so as had some delicious Paxton and Whitfield cheeses decided to give it a go. Really nice, not at all walnut like but adds another flavour and texture
Remained delicious for years
I do love vinegar, salad cream, pickles etc so these have been a firm favourite for years. Theyre pricey but worth it, the vinegar makes a beautiful salad dressing and the walnuts are tender and delicious. My mouth waters when I think of them!
Perfect for my grandmother\x27s recipe
My Dutch Jewish grandmother (b.1896) used to make her wonderful 'Brown Stew' with pickeled walnuts, but I haven't seen them for many years. Make a stew or casserole with beef chunks or meatballs, then add these along with the juice in the jar and brown sugar to taste and cook long enough for flavours to mingle. Makes an amazingly pungent sour sweet stew!
a must try
I definitely agree with by DMGEFRS that these are hard to find and they were pickled green. You don't often get to soft walnuts so definitely a must try. Although they are pickled there is a sweet aftertaste and they taste like preserved prunes.
Hard to find
Pickled walnuts are walnuts picked when still green and then pickled. They are hard to find but we love them. They are expensive and only available in small jars containing around eight pickles depending greatly on their size. These are mostly good but the odd jar or odd walnut has been picked too late in the season so as to develop little woody bits. I make the jar go further by using the vinegar as a sprinkle on top of whatever I fancy having a little bite to it, pasta bake, battered halloumi, cheese sandwiches etc as the vinegar has a lot of pickled walnut flavour.
