Bland!
I usually cook a paella from scratch with the Brindisa paella recipe on Ocado but thought I would give this a go as a short cut. It is so incredibly bland I cannot find the words! I use the same quality Spanish paella rice and chorizo I normally use and chicken breasts from the butchers so no corners cut in the quality of the ingredients but this could not be rescued even with good ingredients. I even added salt to my meal and it made no difference to the extreme lack of taste. Avoid if you know how a good paella should taste! I know this isnt claiming to be a paella but the ingredients and the look of the product is so close that it could be mistaken as such?
Lovely
I rarely use flavour packets. However, as a full time working person, you sometimes want something that is quick and flavourful. I am rating 4 stars as I modified it quite a bit.. Firstly, I added chorizo. I also used chicken stock as opposed to just water. I also added a dash of smoked paprika and some chilli flakes, but that is because my husband and I like things spicy and as I have not cooked this before, was not sure what kind of kick it would have. I used paella rice, which I think is a must with this dish, using any other rice, I do not think would give it the same texture. I reduced the rice to 200 grams w/ 650 ml chicken stock. I also cooked it differently from the packet. I browned the chorizo first, removed the chorizo, then cooked the chicken in the oil, added the veg, cooked till softened a little, then pretty much followed the recipe after that, apart from I added the peas when finished & let sit covered for 10 minutes.
Not half bad!
Spanish rice made from scratch isnt that hard but I found this packet in the back of my pantry and decided to go with it. I made boiled/shredded chicken with Mexican seasoning separately so it wasnt in the rice. I used a shallot instead of red onion. And I added frozen corn and frozen green beans because I didnt have a red pepper or peas. It was pretty good! One item of note is to add sufficient water so that the rice doesnt taste dry. If anything, the rice needs to be slightly moist. I cant wait to eat the leftovers.
Needs modifying
Enjoyed this but wish I had read the reviews first. The rice to meat & veg ratio is way out. You either need to cut down on rice or use more chicken and vegetables. I used basmati rice as it was all we had but it cooked perfectly.
tasteless
Bought due to the good reviews but I have to say this was absolutely tasteless, had to add way more paprika, salt, lemon juice, herbs and stock to boost the flavour. Waste of money!
Quick & easy
I've only recently discovered this and really pleased with it. Having previously bought the Picard frozen paella, decided to give this a whirl. As others suggested, I reduce the quantity of water to 650ml and rice to 200g for the recipe. Also add raw king prawns, cooked chorizo and smoked paprika to season. Our 13 year old finds it a bit spicy for her liking, but hasn't complained outright yet! Very convenient, as a 'pretend' paella.
